Ready for a big holiday, with lots of fun? Your home is all set and everything?s done? Today, you'll learn how to also protect those we often forget, Fido and Fluffy -- our loyal pets. Holiday meals are a tempting time to feed dogs and cats table scraps. While turkey and chicken have tantalizing bones, they break up and can lodge anywhere, with serious consequences. Even steak bones can be dangerous. Gravy, fat and poultry skin also can cause hours of gastro-intestinal distress. Beyond food, holiday plants are a danger. Today is Poinsettia Day, so named for Joel Poinsett who brought the plant here 200 years ago. Holiday plants can and do make pets sick. And, some -- holly and mistletoe, for example -- are poisonous. Other holiday dangers, for both pets and kids, are electrical cords (which they can chew and/or pull), burning candles, pine needles and ornaments. Finally, never leave pets and kids alone together. And watch for doors left open that beckon both.
