Stains on Marble

Marble's tough, right? Wrong! It easily becomes stained. But sometimes it can be cleaned. Max Baer Jr., who played Jethro on "The Beverly Hillbillies," was born this day in 1937. When the Clampett family moved to Beverly Hills, their new home was elegant and sparkling; lots of rich marble everywhere -- on floors, stairways, tabletops, counters and walls. But soon, it began showing wear and tear -- With nasty stains everywhere. But why so? Isn't stone supposed to be tough? It is, indeed. But, it isn't stone; it's petrified calcium (old sea shells). Thus it's porous and easily stained or damaged. There's a really neat trick for cleaning stained marble. To remove things such as Jethro?s spilled orange juice, Ellie Mae's berry pie filling, critter tracks and Granny's possum stew, here's what to do. Take half a lemon, dip it in table salt, and rub the stain vigorously.
