Thanksgiving?s come and gone. Now children are making lists and people are starting to shop and putting up decorations. Today, in part one of putting up holiday lights, you'll learn whether or not your home is wired for fire. The National Fire Protection Association cites electrical distribution equipment such as wiring, switches, outlets, extension cords, plugs and the like as the third leading cause of home fires over the last five years. If any of the following sounds like your house, your home could have seriously (and dangerously) overloaded wiring: Is your home more than 20 years old?
Today's electrical use per person is at least five times higher than in days gone by. Do you have multiple cords plugged into one outlet? Are you tripping circuit breakers or blowing fuses? Is your TV picture shrinking or fading? (Television is a good voltage indicator.) Are room lights dimming? Are appliances running more slowly or taking longer? If so, have an electrician check your wiring. In the meantime, stagger your power sources for a safe and bright holiday season.
