Tip of the Day

New "Energy Star" sheriff in town

"Wyatt Earp," TV's first genuine adult Western made its debut on this day in 1955. Actor Hugh O'Brien pinned on his star, and the bad guys in Dodge City learned there's a new sheriff in town. Same goes today when new appliances show up in your home wearing the Energy Star -- the official label that tells energy-guzzling appliances their days of robbing energy dollars are over. Still wondering what that Energy Star label means? The EPA created it to identify and promote energy-efficient products that far exceed minimum government standards -- like clothes washers that're 50 percent more efficient and use 50 percent less water; dishwashers that are 25 percent more efficient; refrigerators and air conditioners that'll save money, too. Today, the Energy Star is on everything from computers and TVs to furnaces and water heaters. Even new homes that're 30 percent more efficient tell those energy-guzzling robbers and rustlers at your place there's a new sheriff in town. And that's the On The House Tip for today.
