Tip of the Day

Build your own compost

Planning on building a compost pile? Decomposition can take 1 to 2 years or 6 weeks! Today you will learn what “Hurries” the process and what affects time, giving you more OR less! Compost “basics” require finding a good location, keeping at least two feet away from structures and have easy access for dumping, with a water source nearby for wetting it down. Beyond that, “Mother Nature” will take over. However, there are things you can do to speed up the decomposition process. One is covering the pile with plastic to retain heat. Another is building a three-foot square bin that also retains heat and amplifies the process. Other tips include: keeping the pile wet (but not soggy) and turning it frequently to rotate the material, exposing all compost contents to the hot center on a regular basis and maintain a good heat. Good compost produced with reasonable speed qualifies you as a savvy gardening pro in the know!
