Are you ready for the last big weekend of summer? Is your deck ready for friends, family, and barbecues, or does it have loose boards with nails popping up? Do a pre-holiday deck check. If there are problems, a little care can keep it from looking like a wreck. This time of year cleaning and resealing is helpful, but don’t stop there. You’ve probably got nails that are slowly working loose. Pounding them back in will only yield a temporary solution; they’ll just work their way back out again. For a more lasting fix, pull out the loose nails, and hammer new ones at a different angle. For a longer-lasting fix, head down to the hardware store for deck screws. They'll solve the problem for good. Get extras, too -- for stragglers that show up later. Keep maintaining your deck by cleaning, re-sealing and re-attaching boards, and it’ll serve you well for many holidays to come. And that's the On The House tip for today.
