Everyone loves a beautiful lawn and lots of trees; today's homeowners are spending a record 17.4 billion a year on landscaping. The benefits are many, ranging from the visual beauty of lush greenery to actual savings through increased energy-efficiency due to proper shading and cooling. There's one more advantage, and it's worth often is overlooked -- the extent to which greenery boosts property value. Appraisers say attractive landscaping adds 5 percent to a home's sale price, while poor landscaping lowers value by as much as 8 percent to 10 percent. While many homeowners tackle the job themselves, more and more are hiring landscape architects, horticulturists, tree experts and lawn and garden contractors.
