Jerry Mathers, who played "the Beaver" on television, was born this
day. In one episode, Beaver outsmarted brother Wally and beat him to the movies with a nifty painting trick. Both had plans to join friends to see a film, but their parents, June and Ward, first put them to work doing some painting. Beaver was to paint the bedroom while Wally did the den. Neither was to leave until he completed his task. June choose a dark brown tone for one room and a deep blue for the other. The walls in both rooms needed a coat of primer first. Analyzing the situation, Beaver poured some of his dark paint into the light-colored primer, first, and then began painting, while Wally just started applying the plain primer. They finished priming about the same time and began applying the finish coat. But while Beaver's coat went on smooth and full, Wally's was blotchy, with primer showing through. He, thus, needed to apply a second coat. When Beaver cleaned up and headed out, Wally had to continue working. For more tips, visit our Web site at onthehouse.com.
