Crystal-ball Technique for Clear Finishes

Applying a clear finish to bare wood can be a hit-or-miss proposition. When the finish enhances the grain, it might be too light. But adding a stain to darken it isn't possible after the fact. Wish there was some way to know before you paint? There is. You can see what a clear finish on wood will look like by moistening a soft, clean cloth with paint thinner and wiping it on the surface first. The wet surface will bring out the grain, just like a clear coat of varnish, shellac or polyurethane will do. You'll know whether you need stain, or not. The thinner will evaporate and you'll know what to do. And that's the On The House tip for today.
