Tip of the Day

Kid-proofing Your Home

Friedrich Froebel created the first kindergarten to nurture pre-schoolers on this day in 1782. If you've got tots in your home, they deserve special attention. First cap all electrical outlets with plastic plugs. Next, pad everything with sharp corners. Put gates at all staircases, windows and outside doorways. In the kitchen, cook on back burners, put safety covers on stove knobs. Put childproof locks on cabinets and drawers where cleaners, trash or sharp objects are stored. Loop refrigerator door handles -- up high -- with Velcro. Trash compactors are dangerous, too, if not properly closed and locked. Look for things kids can pull down like table cloths and dangling electric cords or places they can get pinched, squeezed, choked or trapped. Create safe play areas away from risk and establish ?no zones? -- places they are never to go. And that's the On The House tip for today.
