Time for "Moving On Up?"

"The Jeffersons" first aired on this day more than 25 years ago. George Jefferson finally made it from Queens to Manhattan's swanky East Side through a series of shrewd moves. If you're interested in moving on up, too, real estate pros say the winter months, between Thanksgiving and the end of January, are among the best times for house-hunting. On holidays everyone's celebrating and afterward recovering; few people are out shopping for homes, and sellers get discouraged. The result is excellent bargains for those in the know. Savvy shopping experts say it's a great time to shop for a loan, too. Get preapproved for one first, then write down what you want. Look at lots of homes, take a camera, keep notes, compare. Then bid intelligently. Often the nastier the weather, the better the bargain. So get up, get out and start "moving on up" like George did. And that's the On The House tip for today.
