This week in 1966 "Star Trek" made its TV debut. For 33 years Captain Kirk, Mister Spock and the crew of the Starship Enterprise used nifty gadgets like phasers to battle Clingons and beamed themselves up, into and out of trouble, again and again. For 79 episodes and countless re-runs their futuristic tools and ingenuity showed many a mortal man how to operate in a pinch and how to get things done with technology. For instance, just by watching, one learned to beam himself up, too when working in tight, dark spaces, flat on his back, needing both hands and some light. One simply takes a low-tech empty soup can and stands the flashlight within it -- moving and directing the beam to provide work light where needed, hands free. And that's the On The House tip for today.
