Tip of the Day

Backyard Island Fantasy

The United States annexed Hawaii on this day in 1898. Is your fantasy to live in a tropical paradise? You can create a little fantasy-island adventure right in your own backyard. Start with a simple water-garden pond with a shallow depth of 2 feet or less. It can range from a few feet square to swimming-pool size. Once it's excavated, line it with heavy vinyl sheeting, or use a prefab plastic pool. Then go native with rocks, trees and foliage -- creating your own tropical island look. Add a waterfall or underwater lights Use color lights on landscaping. A circulating pump and filter will keep water clean and mosquito-free. Adding fish helps, too. Then add water plants for character and to keep the pond water fresh and clear. And that's the On The House tip for today.
