A couple of hundred years ago someone dropped off some bamboo plants on our shores. They came from China or somewhere in Asia. Like Kudzu and other invasive, hardy greenery, the bamboo has spread like wildfire. It has, to date, engulfed untold U.S. acres. This import is near impossible to kill and quite unwelcome. Options are few — the main defense is to cut it back until you wear it out. Another approach is to spray it with herbicide. You might ask why China, which has had bamboo since the beginning of time, isn't over-run with the stuff. Well, they have pandas that eat 40 pounds of bamboo daily. Not much of an option for us, alas.
