Universal design isn't just for the elderly or disabled; it's people-friendly design for everybody. Here are six easy things you can do to make home and the workplace safer, more comfortable and accessible for all. First, replace doorknobs with lever-style hardware. Levers are better on all faucets, too. Second, install slip-resistant floors and use only non-skid type area rugs. Third, make stairs safer inside and out. Be sure the edges of treads are clearly defined. Handrails are a must on both sides, if possible. Fourth, provide good lighting everywhere. Eyes dim as we age and require more illumination. It is one of the least expensive improvements and provides safety benefits. Fifth, have a place to put things down both outside and inside entrances to your home. Finally, simple bathroom upgrades improve both convenience and safety. Add grab bars in the tub or shower and anti-scald controls to protect young and old alike.
