Whether from a tiny undetected leak or a raging flood, water can damage your home. Today, in part one of Water Woes, we discuss avoiding harm by using a leak alarm. A small leak from the icemaker in your fridge, your dishwasher, wash machine, the toilet or even from a supply line under a sink can cause serious damage over time. The damage can range from wood rot to nasty mold. It sometimes can lead to torrents of water pouring through your house, as well. Your best protection? Install a Water Cop. Least expensive is a small passive battery-operated leak detector. It will cost from $5 and up. It sits right where you think a leak might happen, and will sound an alarm when it detects moisture. Other alarms, for specific areas or a whole house, can detect unusual water flow, then sound an alarm and finally shut it off — immediately. They're expensive, but worth it. Tomorrow, in part two of Water Woes, we'll discuss what to do after a flood.
