Jackie Gleason, who played Ralph Kramden on "The Honeymooners," was born on this day. In one memorable episode, Ralph decided to surprise Alice by refinishing the kitchen table. Donning a pair of rubber gloves to protect his hands, Ralph tore the right one as he pulled it on. When he took out another pair that he found in a drawer, the right glove tore again as he pulled it on. Frustrated, Ralph set the gloves aside and went to work barehanded. A little later, his neighbor, Ed Norton, stopped by. "Whatcha doin', Ralphie?", he asked. "Stripping" blustered Ralph. "I can come back later," said Norton. "No, I'm stripping the table, you nitwit " Ralph bellowed. "Got it -- and your hand, too?" asked Norton. "No right-hand glove" offered Ralph -- just left ones." Norton then picked up a left glove and turned it inside out. Handing it back to Ralph he said, "Here. Now you got a right-hand glove." Snatching it out of Norton's grasp, and putting it on, Ralph countered, "I knew that."
