Brick Weather-Beaters

Tomorrow is Super Bowl Sunday -- No. 39, from Jacksonville, Fla. Last year's four devastating hurricanes did $42 billion worth of damage -- the costliest hurricane season on record. Which building materials stood up best? What type of home passed Mother Nature's test? For the answer, we turn from Mother Nature to Mother Goose and the story of the "Three Little Pigs." Remember what happened to piggies No. 1 and No. 2?Their houses were blown down with a huff and a puff by the big bad wolf. Much like folks in Florida, who built with wood, vinyl and fiber cement siding materials, these piggies didn't use the most-resistant materials. For some Floridians, windblown debris punched through up to 5 feet. However, like piggy No.3, Floridians who had homes made of brick not only weathered the storm with little or no damage, they enjoyed lower insurance premiums, greater energy efficiency and higher resale values, as well. When Mother Nature comes calling, go with Mother Goose. Use brick!
