Do-it-Yourself Disasters

Those reality home makeover shows have many homeowners tackling big projects. Unfortunately, many are beyond their abilities. Today, you'll learn who homeowners are calling to undo their do-it-yourself disasters. One of every five improvement- and repair projects are done by do-it-yourselfers. These projects represent about $35 billion a year. Unfortunately, not every project goes smoothly, and for professional handyman service companies, 50 percent of their calls come on Monday mornings. Pros say these are in response to major flubs by tool-wielding ?weekend warriors.? To avoid finding yourself in the Monday morning queue, be sure you understand the project at hand, and the consequences if you mess up. It's one thing to install shelving improperly, but replacing a toilet -- and having it leak and destroy flooring -- is another.
