Enjoying the last big weekend of summer? Just when you thought it was safe outdoors, beware! Mosquitoes aren't only a problem in hot weather -- they're still here (and a serious health hazard!) The American mosquito control association advises that August, September and October are peak months for contracting West Nile virus! Since it first appeared in New York in 1999, it has spread to all states and Canadian provinces, with tens of thousands of human cases reported and hundreds of fatalities now in 39 states. It's serious and not to be ignored. We remind you to eliminate all standing water. Mosquitoes breed in as little as one teaspoon of it, and they go from egg to adult in only 7 to 10 days! So dump and re-fill things with water every 5 days. Don't just beware -- be aware! Remember, they're most active at dawn and dusk and they're drawn to cologne and dark clothing. Always wear a repellant containing deet. Mosquitoes aren't just a pest -- they're a real threat!
