Rosemary Clooney, who sang "This Old House", was born on this day. "This Old House" has become the homeowner's anthem. We hum and whistle it while we work. Speaking of work, are you planning on doing some house painting this weekend, but you're not sure what you did wrong last time? There are many reasons an exterior paint job fails. Most involve preparation, temperature, or moisture. Today you'll learn how to "read" your paint. First, if you see surface "chalking", it's normal. Many paints are manufactured so they break down over time. When it rains or they're washed, the surface rinses away and the color brightens. If you see bubbles or blisters, open them up. Bare wood indicates moisture has gotten under your paint. If you see paint underneath, the top coat was applied when it was too hot outside, trapping moisture between the old and new coats. In all three cases, sand, prime, and properly prepare the surface before repainting again.
