Tip of the Day

Specialty Rooms and Spaces

"Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood" debuted on TV on this day in 1967. It depicted friendly folks interacting in a pleasant make-believe neighborhood. Today, a housing trend from days gone by is re-emerging to make Main Street, USA, more like that of Mr. Rogers' neighborhood. So what's coming back? How about the old-fashioned front porch for sitting rocking, and chatting with passers-by? Today, in cities with dense housing and sidewalks, porches now appear on 42% of all new construction and good old "Hi neighbor, how are ya?" conversations are in full swing. Other new specialty rooms and spaces include high demand for fully-equipped home offices, home theatres with seating for 10 or more that rival Hollywood screening rooms, and safe rooms like the one in Jodie Foster's "Panic" movie. Safe rooms are also used to store valuables. Also, look for storm rooms to keep one safe in severe weather and high-rises with lots of dog-friendly amenities. Obviously, it's not just Mr. Rogers' neighborhood any more!
