Tip of the Day

Re-Caulking A Tub Or Shower

Sunday is Mother's Day, and if you want to do something nice for Mom, re-caulk her bathtub or shower. If yours has seen better days and is cracked or stained with dark stretches of mildew, soften it first with a caulk remover or heat it with a hair dryer, then cut and scrape the old caulk out. Use rubbing alcohol or paint thinner on any residue, then scrub with bleach and powdered laundry detergent to kill any leftover mildew. Fill the tub with water to weigh it down and apply a bead of tub and tile caulk into the joint. For a straight and smooth seam, apply masking tape first, then smooth with an ice cube or moistened finger. After it's smooth, immediately remove the tape by pulling up and away. Let it cure for at least twenty-four hours, during which time you can buy Mom bubble bath, scented oils, candles, and a fluffy new towel!
