Samuel Morse was born this day in 1791. His system of dots and dashes spanned continents, crossed oceans, and allowed us to communicate with ships at sea. There's a code for buying supermarket produce, too. Think those little stickers you see on fruits and vegetables are advertisements, or are there for supermarket checkout pricing? Not so...in reality, they're chock full of important information! Today you'll learn how to decode fruits and veggies to find out how your produce purchase was grown. Look closely and you'll see some small numbers. A sticker with four digits means this food was conventionally grown the good old fashioned "farmer way"! Five digits starting with an 8 indicates produce that is genetically engineered, and five digits starting with a nine signals food that was organically grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. And those little stickers themselves? By law, they're required to be completely safe to eat as well!
