Mosquito Magnet

Spring is here, and along with it comes outdoor activities, April showers, and mosquitoes! Today you'll learn how technology fools mosquitoes into thinking that a deadly trap is you and me! In 1997, a small company called American Biophysics developed a carbon dioxide-based mosquito trap called the "mosquito magnet." The next year, they sold $200,000 worth. Continuing with just this one product, in 2001 they sold $23 million worth. In 2002, sales hit $55 million, and in 2003, they sold more than $100 million in mosquito magnets worldwide! Zowie! So how does this mosquito magnet work? It emits carbon dioxide, heat and moisture that mimics human breathing. Placed between mosquito breeding areas (like bushes or standing water) and humans, it draws them in and keeps large areas pest-free. Still wondering why the mosquito magnet is a big hit? Wait a few more weeks, and we'll bet you wish you had one!
