The laser beam was patented this day in 1960. Today, laser tools are a big thing, and for distance measuring, they're great. Today you'll learn that there are two types of tools to consider...and a range in price (some smaller and some bigger.) First, let's clear up a common misconception. Many distance meters, often thought to be laser tools, really just have laser pointers that simply target what is to be measured. The actual measurement is taken by bouncing an ultrasonic beam off the target. With true laser devices, the beam both targets and gauges the distance. The first major difference is distance. Ultrasonic is accurate only up to 50 or 60 feet. Laser reads within 1/8th inch for 300 feet. The second big difference? Price! True laser costs from 300 to 500 dollars, while ultrasonics start at only $50. For different needs and usage, both work well. Know the difference, and you won't be disappointed.
