Today's Home 1: What's In There?

Currently, more new homes are being built than at any time in the last 25 years! So what's in an average home (besides 2300 square feet?) Each new home starts with 19 tons of concrete, 14,000 board-feet of framing lumber, and 13,000 square feet of sheathing. On that, we add 3,000-plus square feet of roofing and the same amount of exterior siding material. Inside, there are 10,000 square feet of wall and ceiling ?finishing? materials, with 3,000 square feet of insulation and 225 feet of duct work. Add 2300 square feet of flooring material, about 19 windows and 12 doors (including the garage), 20 kitchen and bath cabinets, 4 sinks, 3 toilets, 2 tubs, 1 shower stall, and a fireplace. That's what's in today's home! Tomorrow, in part 2, it's "what buyers want."
