The first typewriter was manufactured in 1873. When electric typewriters came along, tens of thousands of manual machines were tossed, and when personal computers entered the scene, electric typewriters headed for the dumpster too. Thus continues our ever-increasing quest for new and improved electronics. Getting a new cell phone this year?
200 million other people are too! Today, almost half a billion consumer electronic products are scrapped every year. The total number of consumer products scrapped will be about six billion by 2010. 200 million of these will be old televisions and one billion will be obsolete computers. Should they all wind up in our landfills, they'll produce tons of toxic poisons, from lead and zinc to chromium and mercury. As you continue to upgrade and add new items, remember: today's goodies, gadgets and gizmos are tomorrow's toxic disasters waiting to happen. Responsible disposal is a duty (and an expense) we all have to share.
