Tip of the Day

Where Energy Goes

"It Takes A Thief" debuted on TV this day in 1968. It starred Robert Wagner pulling off big capers (often involving millions of dollars!) Homeowners are losing millions every year, too (even billions!) to sneaky energy thieves that quietly siphon hard-earned dollars away needlessly. This happens because most people have no idea where their energy dollars go and what they can do to slow down those spinning meters. During winter, a typical home (one with forced-air central heating) uses almost half the electricity and natural gas it consumes for heating and lighting. The next two biggest users are the refrigerator and water heating, as they run continuously. Then come small appliances like computers, VCRs, stereos, and home office equipment, followed by cooking and clothes washing and drying. The remainder goes (not surprisingly) to TV. When you know where your energy is being used, you can start coming up with individual solutions to reduce costs. Start putting solutions together... and lock "energy thieves" out of your house!
