Have pesky little flying insects arrived? You might unknowingly be
breeding fruit flies. Fruit flies are attracted to ripened or fermenting fruits and vegetables. Once they get started, they breed fast. Their source, thus, must be located and eliminated, and any remaining adults caught and disposed of because each lays 500 eggs that mature in just a week. So, acting quickly is a must. First look for rotting produce, seal it tightly and discard. Be suspicious of the garbage disposal or another hard-to-reach location as the source. Tape a clear plastic food storage bag over it, and catch the insects if or as they emerge. Finally, once the source is located and eliminated or treated with a pyrethrum-based insecticide, catch any remaining fruit flies by placing a funnel into a small bottle baited with a few ounces of cider vinegar. This will attract them and then trap them inside. And that's the On The House Tip for today.
