Tip of the Day

Lost electrical box

Thomas Edison first demonstrated the incandescent light bulb on this day in 1879. However it would have been a bit more difficult for him had he experienced a somewhat common problem that happens to many do-it-yourselfers. In fact, it even happens to pros. It's a lost electrical box that accidentally get covered up when you hang sheets of drywall. When this occurs, it's not uncommon for someone to ask "Hey where's the light switch?" Or the outlet can disappear, too. If this happens to you, don't panic; there's a simple solution or two. First, boxes are usually installed in logical places and at standard heights. So start your search there at the point of your best guess. Look for a bump, and try holding a straight edge against the wall to detect any bulge or protrusion. Another method is to use a stud sensor with a live wire that detects function. Just turn on the power to the box and sensor. And that's the On The House Tip for today.
