After first appearing in comic books and newspapers, "Dick Tracy"
showed up on TV and in movie theaters. One of his biggest mysteries ever was solving the puzzle of where all those comics and newspapers went after they disappeared into the recycling bin. Whereas some get reused here in the states, a lot of them go by boat to China -- more than $1 billion-worth last year alone. Waste paper is now the largest export from the port of L.A. But most of it has a round-trip ticket. First we ship our old cardboard boxes to China, then they send us car parts, tools, toys and such, made in large part from many of our recyclables. They're packed in boxes made from our original boxes. And that's the On The House Tip for today.
