Floors on Fresh Concrete

"Dragnet" made its debut on TV on this day in 1951. In that first episode, a super serious sergeant Joe Friday and his partner detective Frank Smith began their crime-solving careers. One time they were called to investigate a code 10-86 -- premature flooring over fresh concrete. Not a pretty picture. "Open up -- concrete police. Got a report you installed a hard wood floor, correct? Was that over concrete sir? New concrete? Uh-huh. And did you wait at least a month before doing so? That's what we thought. Premature flooring." While concrete sets up in just a few hours, the chemical curing process goes on for weeks. If you put down new flooring too soon, you run the risk of trapping moisture and causing all sorts of problems -- depending upon the flooring material you use. "Those are the facts, sir. Premature flooring is a crime." And that's the On The House tip for today.
