"The Dinah Shore" show made its television debut on this day in
1951. All over America, rooms in homes got colder as people shifted
furniture to make room for their brand-new, first-ever TV set. They
pulled couches and chairs in close so as not to miss a single
black-and-white moment. Why did many rooms become colder than they had
been before? Because heat-generating items (like floor lamps or table
lamps) that once sat elsewhere in the room (or maybe even the new TV
itself) were moved directly below the existing thermostat. The gently
rising heat from these items fooled the thermostat into thinking the
room was warm when it was cool. The furnace which should have fired-up,
didn't. Today, more than 50 years later, this problem still exists in
many homes. Do you have a heat-generating item "fooling" the thermostat
at your house? Better check. And that's the On The House tip for today.
