Skylights: On the Lighter Side

"Simon and Simon" made its TV debut on this day in 1981. It was a popular crime show featuring two brothers, Rick and A.J., who were private eyes. Headquartered in San Diego, they took on -- and solved -- tough cases. One day Rick noted it was dark in the office. In fact, it was always dark, even on sunny days. Pondering this, Rick suggested they install a skylight. "Good idea," said A.J., noting there were many types to choose from. "I'll handle it," said Rick. Having read a great deal on the subject, he knew placement was extremely important, as skylights bring in 30 percent more light than regular vertical windows. If north-facing, it could be hot on sunny days, so he decided on a west exposure, with shades to handle any afternoon heat gain. Settling back with his feet on the desk, he looked up and said, "I'm the smart one" and promptly fell over backward. And that's the On The House tip for today.

Roof Mold / Exterior Mildew
Roofing dealers sell zinc-coated strips that fasten near the ridge, and oxidize when it rains -- inhibiting mold and fungus.
