Tip of the Day

Water, Water (Not) Everywhere

Pipes and hoses have a way of springing leaks when you're away from home. Today you'll learn how new sensor technology prevents your having underwater property. Today is the 13th, when all sorts of bad things such as water damage from broken pipes and hoses tend to happen. In the past, we've reminded you to check washing machine hoses and advised you about water sensor alarms that detect and alert you to a leak. But that happens only if you're at home. If you're not, it's going to be wet. New sensor technology can save the day. One type has single or multi-zone sensors that quickly shut off water if it detects a leak. The second device acts like a circuit breaker for your main water line. If it detects an unusually high amount of water rushing in faster than usual, due to a ruptured line, it automatically shuts down water to the entire home. It can even alert an outside service to the problem. Underwater property? Not with today's new sensor technology. And that's the On The House tip for today.
