Remodeling Scorecard

Ever wonder what other people are spending on home improvements and remodeling? Today, with our "home improvement scorecard," you'll learn where the dollars go and for what America is spending dough. Today, homeowners spend an average of $1,500 a year for maintenance, repair, or improvement with the largest part of the budget, 34 percent, going for paint and wallpaper. The next biggest expenditure is for plumbing, 12 percent, followed by roofing, 11 percent. The total heating- and air-conditioning items run about 7 percent, and all types of flooring comes in at about 4 percent. For the really big-ticket items, like major remodeling, homeowners today are spending an average of $20,000 to renew their kitchens and about $10,000 to redo their baths.
