Electrical Receptacle Tool

While we always advise turning off the main power before doing any electrical work, there are professionals -- and those who think they are -- who skip this step with some degree of success. But not always. Are you an electrical hotshot with a sure hand that doesn't turn off the power before you work? If so, there's a new tool that might interest you. Plastic plugs were originally designed to make it easier to remove, hold and work on electrical receptacle boxes. These plugs go into the two outlets with a handle bridging the space in between so you can avoid accidentally touching the hot spots when taking it out to disconnect the wiring. Obviously, it works great when the power's off, as well. Whether you work safely or live dangerously, here's another tip you should always heed. Before putting the box back into the wall, wrap it all the way around with electrical tape, covering all screw terminals and bare wires. Whether removed dead or alive by you or the next guy, it'll be appreciated. And that's the On The House tip for today.
