Since today's the first day of autumn, we'll soon be putting away our garden tools. But, if it isn't done right, next spring will be a fright _ with dull blades, crud and lots of rust. So, take our sage advice. From deep within the Carey Brothers' vault of excavation-hibernation information, we bring sleepy-time tips for tools. When it's time to prepare your gardening gear for winter storage, don't put them away dirty. Wash them off thoroughly. If they're extremely rusty, clean them with a soap-filled, steel-wool pad dipped in turpentine. Wear rubber gloves while doing so. Then use a file to sharpen all blades and all cutting edges, even those on shovels and hoes. Add a light coat of oil for extended storage. Self-polishing floor wax also prevents rusting. Driving small garden tools into a bucket of dry sand stops rust, too. A little care in putting tools away this fall, will keep you from looking like Fred Flintstone come next spring.
