"Gunsmoke" made its television debut this day in 1955. Back in the Old West six-shooters were home security until city slickers showed up with sturdy swinging doors fitted with locks and keys. Six-shooters were still a comforting backup until dead-bolt locks came along and changed things. Soon, bad guys, after spotting a dead bolt, didn't even try to break in. And if they did, it was more trouble than it was worth. The secret lies in good installation; it's no stronger than the latch it goes into. So, a good latch plate, screwed right into your home's structural framing with extra long screws, is what is needed, not a small plate on the door frame. They used to say an inside cylinder lock was best if you had glass. But now, experts say the risk of being locked in outweighs the other risk. Double-cylinder locks no longer are recommended.
