Is removing an old faucet troubling you because it's set in too deeply to unscrew? At some point when you remove a faucet, you'll find -- after taking off the handles and chrome escutcheons -- that the brass stem and the nut that holds it in place are set too deeply in the wall to get a wrench on. And it is out of reach for a regular socket to grip. What to do? Tear out a chunk of the wall? Before you start chipping and chiseling away, take a run down to the hardware store and ask for a set of special "plumbing sockets" made for this very purpose. They're long, slender cylinders that fit standard plumbing with two small holes up near the top, through which you slide a screwdriver shank. Turn to easily unscrew a difficult recessed nut. No need to chisel or fret 'cause plumbing sockets are easy to get. And that's the On The House tip for today.
