TV's "The Name of the Game" comprised three successful shows in one. It came to an end in the early '70s. Each show was dedicated to fighting crime and was connected to a Los Angeles publishing firm. Today in fighting insects and garden pests, the "name of the game" is two powerful chemicals, "diazinon and dursban," a successful and deadly duo that is also about to come to an end. The Environmental Protection Agency has announced that for health and safety reasons, dursban, used in more than 800 bug sprays, pet collars and home and garden products, will stop all over-the-counter sales by December. Diazinon, found in thousands more such products, also will be pulled within a year or two. The result: manufacturers who used these chemicals in their brand names now are scrambling to rename products to better reflect what they actually do. So in the months ahead, watch for new labels with gardening answers and solutions instead of chemical names that cause confusion. Today in pesticides simplicity is the name of the game. And that's the On The House tip for today.
