Fires by Candlelight

Planning a quiet, romantic weekend night with a lovely dinner by candlelight? Today you'll learn how to prevent a fire when candlelight goes haywire. Every year about 8,000 home fires are started by candles -- resulting in 10,000 injuries, 1,000 deaths and more than $1-billion in property damage. Kind of puts a "damper" on romance. There are ways, however, to prevent these types of fires. First, be sure candles sit and fit properly in the candleholder base. Many fires start by candles that simply fall over. Use candleholders that won't burn if the flame gets too low. Trim wicks to 1-quarter inch before lighting, and stop burning a candle if the flame is higher than 1-and-1-half inches. Also keep candles away from flammable materials like furniture and drapes. Finally extinguish all candles before leaving the room or going to sleep. Remember these tips, and have yourself a safe and cozy romantic night instead of fire by candlelight. And that's the On The House tip for today.
