It's that time again -- time to "spring forward," or be an hour late. When it's time to reset your clocks, it's time to check smoke-alarm batteries, too. While you're at it, check the backup batteries in all household safety systems such as carbon-monoxide detectors and burglar-alarm control panels. Many other electronic products have backup batteries, too, that save and store information or keep them operating during a power failure. This includes the memory in telephones and answering machines, as well as some alarm clocks and sprinkler timers. In fact, these time changes should serve as a reminder to do all sorts of things such as replacing furnace- and air-conditioner filters, changing the direction of ceiling fans (to forward in summer, reverse in winter) and re-setting programmable thermostats. When alarms are fully powered, you're protected. When electric products are backed-up, you are too. And that's the On The House tip for today.
