Recently we advised you to upgrade your wire as your number of electronics grows higher and higher. Today, smart-thinking, up-to-the-minute consumers add greater wire capacity when they build new homes or remodel their existing ones. They use CAT-3 and Cat-5 cable and electric metallic tubing called "conduit" to easily fish in new-wire technologies as they become available -- without tearing up walls. But there's one more thing you should know. These wires must be kept separate and away from existing house wiring by at least 6 inches or more, if at all possible. Otherwise the new high-tech twisted pairs and coaxial cables will pick up interference from alternating-current lines that are too close. Avoid taking the easy route -- pulling new cables or running conduit through existing holes in studs or in and out of spaces with regular house wiring near by. If you select that easier course, whether under the floor or in the attic, your added wire will give off nasty static. Keep wires separated. And that's the On The House tip for today.
