Phone Wiring? Plan Ahead!

At the recent consumer electronics show, we saw lots of new and exciting gizmos and gadgets -- things you're going to want for your home today, tomorrow and in the years to come. Whether for TV, audio, communication, home control, security or high-tech appliances, most have one thing in common. They require upgraded phone wiring. Is major remodeling in your plans? Will you be adding a room or two? Plan ahead "wire-wise" when you do. A phone still needs only two wires to work, but new technology requires greater capacity. Extra phones and computers are just the beginning. New homebuilders have the right idea. Today they use cat-3 cable (with twisted wires to reduce interference). Pros now suggest cat-5 wire (with even more twists and less interference). For wire needs yet to come, install conduit, electric metallic tubing so you can fish in new wiring without tearing up walls. Wiring today? Think tomorrow. And that's the On The House tip for today.
