Tip of the Day

Top Remodel Projects 2001

Paul Shaeffer, band leader for David Letterman, who made the "Top 10 List" famous, was born this day in 1949. Not to be "topped," we put together a short list of our own: "What's hot in remodeling and what'll they sell you? Ask 2,000 contractors and they'll tell you. "Here's the type of projects they make and for what they've sold, and how long it'll take. Of the $153 billion spent on remodeling (up 7 percent from last year), 62 percent said kitchens were number one. At 61 percent, baths were a close second. Other most-common jobs were room additions, window and door replacement and whole-house makeovers. As far as how long it'll take to complete the work they now have scheduled, 25 percent said six months or more, 25 percent said 4 to 6 months, 44 percent offered 1 to 3 months, and 6 percent stated less than 30 days. On average, these remodelers have three months worth of work on the books.

And that's the On The House tip for today.
