Tip of the Day

Unfurl the Red, White and Blue

Tomorrow is Veteran's Day and from border to border and coast to coast Americans are flying "old glory" in record numbers. Sunday is General George S. Patton's birthday, too. This makes it a very good day to put up a flagpole of your very own. First, check restrictions on placement and height. Next, shop for a prefab flagpole kit with a sleeve base that goes in first. The pole is added later making it easier to install. Dig a hole proportionate to the height and diameter of the pole (most kits suggest what's right), add some gravel for drainage -- angling bottom walls out to create a "bell effect" for better holding power. Use concrete mix and add just a few inches at first. Put the sleeve base in position, add more concrete, use a level on the base and mound the top a bit for water drainage. Let it cure overnight. Then on Sunday, bolt in the pole and muster up a proud salute. And that's the On The House tip for today.
