Universal Design

"I Love Lucy" made its TV debut on this day in 1951, and for 50 years Lucy has driven Ricky crazy with hair-brained schemes that always go wrong. However, today Lucy could change all that. If the Ricardos were remodeling, adding on, improving or repairing their happy little home today, Lucy could plan ahead with something that should always be considered. It's a "universal" design that makes every improvement extra-fine. It's thinking ahead and adding special touches that better serve everyone from those who are young or old to those who are handicapped or physically challenged. Thoughtful touches range from lowering countertop heights, widening doorways, adding better task lighting, lowering wall switches, raising electrical outlets to adding levered door handles. Every room can be made more guest- and resident-friendly, especially kitchens and bathrooms. When you're through, no one will ever notice except those who most need the subtle improvements. For once Ricky would be able to say "Lucy you DON'T have some splainin? to do." I love it! And that's the On The House tip for today.

Ventilation and Exhaust Fans
The best way to handle excessive moisture buildup is with an automatic exhaust fan vented by flexible or rigid pipe to an exhaust port on the roof or an exterior wall.
