New Spin on Saving

"Law and Order" premiered on this day in 1990. The TV program showed how police and the justice system work together to fight crime. In your home, ceiling fans also have two separate and distinct functions. These functions work together to increase comfort and save money. These fans accomplish cooling and heating for only pennies -- compared to far more expensive central air conditioning and forced-air furnaces. Ceiling fans use the "law" of simple science. They cool the home in the summer by circulating air. They heat it in winter by pulling or pushing warm air (that's up near the ceiling) down to where it's needed. Clockwise blade direction moves air up, then down the sidewalls. Counterclockwise blade direction sends air directly down on you. And that's the On The House tip for today.
